Reconstructive Eye Surgery & Orbital Surgery
Ophthalmic Consultants of Connecticut offers reconstructive eye surgery and orbital surgery for Fairfield patients who suffer from eye abnormalities resulting from injury or disease. OCC’s talented oculofacial surgeon, Dr. Robert Della Rocca, is experienced at restoring proper function and preserving vision for patients with damage to their eyelids, eye sockets or other parts of their eyes.
Reconstructive Eye Surgery
Reconstructive eye surgery is performed to correct various abnormalities affecting the eyelids, the midface and the orbit. Such abnormalities can be caused by traumatic injury, congenital defects, heredity and various diseases.
The most common conditions that require reconstructive eye surgery include:
- Congenital eyelid abnormalities – displacement and malposition of eyelids in children
- Ectropion – lower eyelid is turned out away from the eye
- Entropion – the eyelids and lashes are turned toward the inside of the eye
- Lacrimal abnormalities – blockage of the tear ducts and improper drainage
- Orbital fractures – broken or fractured bones surrounding the eye
- Orbital tumors – benign or malignant tumors around or on the inside of the eye
Two common most common types of reconstructive eye surgery are:
- Socket reconstruction – reconstruction of the eye’s socket after injury in preparation for prosthesis
- Traumatic injury reconstruction – treatment for various physical injuries affecting the eyelids, the eyes and the tear ducts
The goal of reconstructive eye surgery is to restore normal eye function and preserve vision as well as to repair structural and tissue abnormalities of the eyelids.
Orbital Surgery
The orbit is the boney socket in the skull where the eye and its supporting structures, such as muscles, nerves and blood vessels, are situated. The socket is also filled with fat, which acts as a cushion and protects the eye. The socket and the eye are extremely sensitive and can be affected by a range of problems, thereby disrupting normal function of the eye. The most common conditions that affect the eye’s socket include infections, diseases and tumors. In some cases, physical injury to the eye may also lead to problems in the eye’s orbit.
Medical conditions affecting the orbit should be treated by an orbital surgeon. The most important step in successfully treating orbital problems is determining the underlying cause, which is usually accomplished through the use of advanced diagnostic imaging systems such as CT scans and MRIs. Dr. Robert Della Rocca is an experienced orbital surgeon and offers a wide range of treatment options, including surgery, which is often necessary for treatment of orbital tumors.
Dr. Rocca is also an accomplished oculofacial surgeon and performs an array of reconstructive and cosmetic surgical procedures as well as non-surgical cosmetic treatments.
